Cement Factory Turned into an Amazing Home

Talk about destiny! In 1973, architect Ricardo Bofill found an old cement factory in Barcelona and saw something most of us would not see...potential. The industrial complex from the turn of the century was made of over 30 silos, underground galleries, and huge engine rooms. The factory, abandoned and partially in ruins, was complete with many surrealist elements, including stairs that climbed up to nowhere, mighty reinforced concrete structures that sustained nothing, and pieces of iron hanging in the air.

Over the course of two years, he remodeled the factory into architectural offices, archives, a model laboratory, and exhibition space, as well as his own personal apartment, with a guest room and gardens. Now if that doesn't sound impressive enough, take a look at the pictures, below.

"The factory is a magic place which strange atmosphere is difficult to be perceived by a profane eye," says Bofill. "I like the life to be perfectly programmed here, ritualized, in total contrast with my turbulent nomad life."

Studio Guilherme Torres designed the LA House for a young couple who wanted to eliminate the small spaces and the traditional partitions in their existing 4,400 sq ft (410 sq m) condominium in Londrina, Brazil.

Passing through the main gate, visitors walk by the pool and arrive at the double-height atrium, which connects the entire house. Pivoting glass doors provide a way indoors, where an all-white living room area is located. It's impossible not to reminiscence about your childhood as you see the Space Invader stickers on the wall.

The kitchen and dining room are perfectly integrated into the open-plan environment. Even the bathroom has been designed to double as a pool changing room.

Kai and Sunny “The Flower Show”

Having been commission by everyone from fashion and literary geniuses Alexander McQueen and David Mitchell to tech giants like Apple and Adobe, the highly acclaimed, award-winning illustration and design duo Kai and Sunny have risen to notoriety over the past few years thanks to their beautiful and highly-detailed nature-inspired designs. Now, in a new solo exhibition entitled “The Flower Show,” the pair will display a series of monotone works that explore the word “flower.” The large-scale, silkscreened images featured within the exhibit will also be accompanied by a limited-edition A3 boxset that contains five letter-pressed images from the show and a short story, entitled “The Gardener,” that was written by author David Mitchell exclusively for this project. Be sure to check out the exhibit, currently on display from now through June 26, 2011 at StolenSpace Gallery in London.

Situated in São Paulo, Brazil, Loft 24-7 is the perfect place to enjoy sunny days. Limestone, rough stone, steel, glass, wood paneling and furnishings were all brought inside to create a harmonious, seamless environment where you're never quite sure if you're inside or out.

"I believe that being inside and feeling like one is outside is a key issue in understanding the interior design being produced today, especially In times when environmental awareness is growing and there is a desire to be close to nature," says Marques.

Section 2 of High Line Opens in NYC

New Yorkers got a treat this week as the second section of New York's iconic High Line park opened, right in time for summer. Section 2 doubles the length to a mile (1.6 km) between Gansevoort Street to West 30th Street, connecting the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Midtown West. Visitors can now enjoy new views of the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and the New Yorker Hotel.

Designed by New York-based design firms James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the High Line is a city park built on a chunk of elevated railroad. New York has invested $115 million on the project but it is being credited with producing an estimated $2 billion in private investment in the surrounding West Chelsea area, plus 8,000 construction jobs.

"The High Line is already a world-renowned destination and New York City icon, and with the addition of Section Two, it makes for an even more enjoyable experience," said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "The second half-mile adds different views and new features, making it distinct from the first section but no less remarkable."

In addition to getting to watch the artist at work on these pieces, guests of the Hollywood Standard will also be treated to a McGinness installation on the side of the hotel itself.

Often we catch ourselves daydreaming about the perfect city digs. An artsy Soho loft perhaps? Maybe an industrial Brooklyn warehouse or a charming West Village brownstone? One that always remains in the forefront of our minds is the lofty Clock Tower apartment, wedged happily betwixt the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. A little background info – The Clock Tower was erected in 1915 on the Dumbo waterfront, and sits atop one of the largest poured concrete buildings in New York. But today, what used to be a machine room for clocks now houses a stunning home.

Up until recently, images of the Clock Tower apartment have remained somewhat a mystery. But when developer David Walentas purchased the apartment the first item in order was a renovation. (Did we mention, the $25 million dollar price tag makes it the most expensive apartment in all of Brooklyn?). Designer Stefano Venier was brought onto the scene to create a sleek, minimalistic design complete with a sophisticated kitchen which would become a focal point for the space.

Studio Guilherme Torres was recently commissioned to redesign the interior of this penthouse apartment in São Paulo, Brazil. After tearing down all of the walls and rebuilding the installation, Torres used a polymer cement to recreate the floors, stairs and walls of the entire apartment. A large wooden bookshelf handcrafted from Canadian oak serves as the main concept of the project and surrounds the entire living room, while the rest of the home is updated with modern touches including a state-of-the-art home theater system and retro-inspired furniture.

Located in the heart of New York City, 3×1 is a new retail concept store that has a full-fledged, in-house denim manufacturing facility where shoppers can actually stand by and watch as a team of craftsman assembles a pair of jeans. Within just three days of arriving in Adelaide, Australia, street artist ABOVE fell and broke his scapula in two parts, resulting in a head concussion and two hospital visits.

Part of his responsibilities for this 200 foot (63 meter) mixed-media mural was to mentor three extremely talented local Australian artists - Chris Edser, Tristan Kerr, and ANKLES.

"As a collective we decided to comment and paint a word play to relate the adversities of this wall's rocky surface, and the fact that I literally fell broke my bones during this project," says ABOVE. "In the end it was the words that were always there to save us!"

Christopher Lucania is an artist who uses some unlikely mediums. Sure they include more common items like acrylic, latex and oil, but he also adds in plaster, alcohol and large amounts of copy toner. "I also use a process of transferring manipulated images to the canvas.," he tells us. "It involves a jigsaw of copied printouts that I fix to the canvas with a gel medium. After they dry overnight, I rub away the paper to reveal the transfer. Basically I use the gel medium to draw the copy toner out of the paper and the imagery becomes one with the canvas. The paper is merely a vessel."

Though a professional graphic artist for over 13 years, he only turned to painting 4 years ago to realize his own, personal vision. What did he feel like this type of art could do? "My work is very focused on emotion rather than messages," he says. "I feel that in society everyone is generally telling everyone how they should think, and I rather not add to the white noise.

"Besides that, emotional connections are much more challenging and rewarding. I always feel that the emotional connection someone can have with a painting will far exceed the benefits of simply telling a personal story. Now, regarding those emotions, I like to focus on unlikely combination of them. It's not too difficult to create an uplifting work or a somber one, but if I can create something that mixes 'victory, redemption, and hope despite imminent tragedy, judgement, and ultimate annihilation'- then I have something."

Hans-Peter Feldmann’s 100K Installation at the Guggenheim

Last November German conceptual artist Hans-Peter Feldmann was named the winner of the eighth Biennal Hugo Boss Prize, a bi-annual award bestowed by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation for significant achievement in contemporary art, with an attached honorarium of $100,000. In a unique gesture to the museum Feldmann proposed the idea of creating an installation that would involve tacking 100,000 $1 bills to the walls of a large gallery off the Frank Lloyd Wright ramp.

He said in an interview to the NY Times:

“I’m 70 years old, and I began making art in the ’50s,” Mr. Feldmann said in a telephone interview from his studio in Düsseldorf. “At that time there was no money in the art world. Money and art didn’t exist. So for me $100,000 is very special. It’s incredible really. And I would like to show the quantity of it.”

A brand new retrospective exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art explores the full range of Burton’s creative work, not only as a film director, but also as an artist, illustrator, photographer and writer. The exhibition will contain a wide range of objects borrowed from various studio archives and private collections including more than 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, storyboards, costumes and other objects. The retrospective is scheduled to be on display from May 29 through October 31, 2011.

Car brand Jaguar are showcasing their C-X75 electric concept car boosted by jet engines at Clerkenwell Design Week in London this week and have announced plans to put the £700,000 vehicle into production.

Around 250 of the cars will be produced in collaboration with Williams F1, with the jet engines replaced by a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

Four electric motors will be mounted on the car’s axles.

The House on the Flight of Birds may be not the considered the classiest home, but it certainly is fun and original. Consisting of curved volumes combined with unexpected sheltering panels and odd-shaped windows, the entire structure looks almost as if it was put together using humongous children's blocks.

Since Soa Miguel Island in the Azores, Portugal is hit with large amounts of wind and rain, architect Bernardo Rodrigues decided to incorporate a large, red square wall into the design to block the the strong winds of the North Atlantic ocean.

An undulating roof terrace is sheltered behind the screen, so that the diverse patios and covered courtyards on the ground floor are also protected from the rain. On the top floor, private rooms are more enclosed and protected.

Chinese-based artist Zhang Huan is currently hosting a one-person exhibition entitled “49 Days” at Blum & Poe art gallery in Los Angeles. At the center of the exhibition is a monumental brick sculpture named “Pagoda, 2009″ that was originally on display at the Shangai Art Museum. The 22-foot tall bell-shaped pagoda was made from the bricks of centuries-old buildings that used to surround Shanghai but have since been demolished to make room for newer, more modern architectural projects. In addition to this piece, Zhang will also show a series of newly constructed brick sculptures in the likeness of pigs and skull that relate to the story of Zhu Gangqiang. The exhibition will be on display at Blum & Poe from now through July 9, 2011.
